2nd of two posts featuring Filmspotting listeners’ movie tattoos. Filmspotting #491 (coming Fri 5/23) has Adam and Josh sharing their Top 5 Movie Tattoos (We Would Get).

From top to bottom:

1) The guy who started it all - Joshua from Portland, OR. When he responded to our Jarmusch vs Sayles Death Match Poll back on FS #488, he mentioned his Jarmusch-inspired tattoo - Eva’s cassette player from STRANGER THAN PARADISE. Turns out he actually made his Top 5 permanent. From Joshua’s wrist to elbow, are icons representing his other four favorite films: THE LIFE AQUATIC WITH STEVE ZISSOU (the “Team Zissou” Hat); CHILDREN OF MEN (the embryo image from the teaser poster); MOULIN ROUGE (the titular club’s famous windmill); and SPIRITED AWAY (No Face). Joshua, you are our hero.

2) Two from Amanda in Vancouver. Her first is maybe my favorite of the listener tattoos we’ve seen - “Baby Fish Mouth.” From this hilarious scene from the Nora Ephron-penned WHEN HARRY MET SALLY. Amanda writes “The Pictionary scene in When Harry Met Sally, makes me laugh every single time I see it, and that is a feat, because I have been watching this film at least a few times a year for many years.” Seconded. Weirdly, “Baby Fish Mouth” is a phrase I often utter completely at random - or when I’m feeding my infant daughter a bottle. Amanda’s second is the famous sketch of Alfred Hitchhock. Though according to Amanda, not famous enough. Apparently no one recognizes it. Get some new friends, Amanda. Your tattoos are awesome.

3) A three-parter from listener Adam Desaulniers. Part 1 is from this nice moment from the diner scene in BACK TO THE FUTURE. Part 2 is the first film footage Adam shot. And part 3 is from the final scene in Antonioni’s L’AVVENTURA (here’s a link to the still from the movie). Nice, Adam.

4) From listener Luke Mindel, who writes that he’s still waiting for someone to recognize his (very cool) BARRY LYNDON tattoo.

Next week’s Filmspotting Top 5: Movie Tattoos (That We’d Get) (#491). Above, Filmspotting listeners who have already gone there. 1) Will Woolf adds class with Bass - Saul Bass - with his VERTIGO tattoo; 2) Tucker Battrell shows no mercy with the Cobra Kai logo from”The Karate Kid.” 3) Franco Asmeil sent along a buddy’s MISERY tattoo. We’re terrified. 4) Listener Brett Blitzstein has got it turned up to 11 in his SPINAL TAP-inspired ink; 5) John Ingle from Kansas City knows the whereabouts of the MALTESE FALCON. Badass. 5) Rob Holloway’s dolphin tattoo was inspired by Luc Besson’s THE BIG BLUE; 7) “Vaya con dios, brah.” Doesn’t ring a bell? Listener Jimmy Stadt got this tattoo in honor of a POINT BREAK-loving friend who was moving away - those are the movie’s final lines. 8) “Does this count?” asked listener Lance St. Laurent from Conway, AR. Yes, Lance, the Criterion logo counts. But do you come with your own DVD commentary? 9) Savvy Filmspotters will recognize Carter Adams’s tattoo as one of the clues that teenage gumshoe Joseph Gordon Levitt puzzles over in Rian Johnson’s BRICK. 10) Kenny Meier’s body art started with Margot Tenenbaum; Richie came later. The real mystery: how he decided not to start with Hackman.

Got one yourself? Send it to feedback@filmspotting.net and we’ll post it here.

Love it. Been thinking about tattoos lately.

We met, you and I. Many years ago. You had just been born.
Our father brought me and my sister Elia with him on a visit to Casterly Rock. My first time away from Dorne. I didn’t like anything about the Rock. Not the food, not the weather, not your accents. Nothing. But the biggest disappointment…you. The whole way from Dorne all anyone talked about was the monster that had been born to Tywin Lannister. A head twice the size of his body, a tail between his legs, claws, one red eye, the privates of both a girl and a boy. When we met your sister, she promised she would show you to us. Every day we would ask. Every day she would say, “Soon.” Then she and your brother took us to your nursery and…she unveiled the freak. Your head was a bit large. Your arms and legs were a bit small, but no claw. No red eye. No tail between your legs. Just a tiny pink cock. We didn’t try to hide our disappointment. “That’s not a monster,” I told Cersei “That’s just a baby.”

And she said, “He killed my mother.” And she pinched your little cock so hard, I thought she might pull it off. Until your brother made her stop. “It doesn’t matter, she told us. “Everyone says he will die soon. I hope they are right. He should not have lived this long”

Drifting snowflakes brushed her face as light as lover’s kisses, and melted on her cheeks. At the center of the garden, beside the statue of the weeping woman that lay broken and half-buried on the ground, she turned her face up to the sky and closed her eyes. She could feel the snow on her lashes, taste it on her lips. It was the taste of Winterfell. The taste of innocence. The taste of dreams.
